Great post, thanks Daniel. Yeah, the key difference I'm noticing, too, is between congregational and individual behavior: there's clearly a tone shift and an increase in individual consumption of religious media etc, but little to suggest an increase in collective action.

I work with Gen Z and Millennials and I can see this pull towards a performative type of Christianity. As I saw some of your research on the ground, we created a program for middle schoolers based around relationship building, interactive games, mentoring and a short Jesus message. These digital natives struggle with social cues and simply arent outside. I pulled from my Gen X upbringing to create this program to help them build resilience and be part of an offline community. Once out of middle school, we train them for leadership and expose them to the youth ministry. The whole program is run by young adults and high school volunteers who have been through the program...for middle schoolers.

We found our biggest threat is the smartphone and social media apps. So, I would say your research is dead on the mark.

But I do wonder if there is a different between white youth and youth of color. Most of the participants in my program are youth of color from various cultures. The neighborhood is diverse but White people still live there. But they dont come to the program. I have some theories on this.
